When sewing over thicker or uneven layers, topstitching, or quilt piercing, a measured quarter inch can be valuable, however, the Standard 1/4″ foot may not handle these applications with the same finesse as it does on regular seams and edges. That is where the Janome 1/4″ Seam Foot without a guide is perfect. Tips for Using the Quarter Inch Seam Foot on a Janome Sewing Machine

Supplies Required:

  • Janome Sewing Machine
  • Quarter Inch Seam Foot (without Guide)
  • Fabric
  • Sewing threads and bobbin
  • Sewing Pins / Clips
  • Iron (Optional)

Method:

  1. Make sure your sewing machine is turned off.
  2. Attach the Quarter Inch Foot by aligning the horizontal bar on the foot with the presser foot holder. Ensure it sits securely and lower the presser foot lever to hold the foot in place.
  3. Thread Your Machine and Select a Straight Stitch
  4. Place the fabric pieces you intend to sew together under the foot and align the edge of the fabric with the edge of the Quarter Inch Foot.
  5. Lower the Presser Foot and begin sewing. Guide the fabric along the edge of the foot to maintain a consistent quarter-inch seam allowance.

Tips:

  1. Before starting, it is recommended to iron your material flat. Once ironed, pin your pieces together.
  2. Set your stitch length to 2.2 ~ 2.6 (depending on the thickness).

Additional Tip: If you are stitching on light weight fabrics that can pucker, place a piece of scrap fabric before the seam and start stitching from the scrap. This will stabilise the stitch before it reaches the seam. Once finished, cut the scrap away.
