While there are dozens of different compositions and styles to cutting mats on the market, did you know that there is one thing that is universal to all of them (other than the fact that they are used to cut out fabric and craft pieces). Like all tools, your cutting mat can benefit from regular maintenance. By following the tips below, you can ensure that not only does your cutting mat live a long and productive life, it will be a pleasure to use.
Tip #01 - Avoid Repeated Cutting Lines:
When cutting lengths out with your cutting mat, grooves start to appear. These are small and relatively insignificant; however, if you regularly use one line or section of the mat, you can eventually run the risk of slicing through the mat itself, damaging both the rotary blade and the surface underneath the mat (a regular occurrence when consistently cutting quarter yard lengths). To avoid this issue, use different sections and cutting lines on the cutting mat, and turn the mat regularly. This not only protects your blade, and surface, it extends the life of the mat itself.
Tip #02 - Clean Your Cutting Mat Regularly:
Adhesives (like basting spray) can build up on cutting surfaces. To remove these sticky sections, grab a white eraser (the same type that you would use with a pencil) and rub it over your mat. This not only removes the adhesive; it can remove particulates that can attach themselves to the material and work their way into your sewing machine.
Tip #03 - Moisturise:
Did you know your cutting mat needs moisture? When hydrated, the friction on your rotary blades is lessened. This means that the rotary cutting blades will not dull as quickly and the cutting mat is easier to use. Depending on your location (and its relative heat and humidity), it is recommended to moisturise your mat every 6 to 18 months. To do this, prepare a bath with cool water and vinegar (with ¼ cup of vinegar to a gallon of water) and let the mat soak for about 20 minutes. While soaking, you can use a soft brush and some gentle liquid soap to clean the mat’s surface. When finished soaking, rinse and towel dry your mat and with some paper towels below it, place it on a flat surface. Avoid areas that receive direct sunlight or excessive heat, as these can warp your mat.
Tip #04 - Store Your Mat Correctly:
While it is tempting to store your mat upright, this allows the mat to bend slightly; and if left in this condition for some time, this bend can become a new feature to the mat (If this has happened to your mat, check out our article on flattening a warped cutting mat). To avoid deforming your cutting mat, try to store your mat on a flat even surface.
By following these tips, you can enjoy many happy hours of cutting!
