Janome DC2030 vs DC2050
A Feature Comparison
When looking for a good all-purpose sewing machine, two models that are both often referred to as “a great sewing machine for beginners” are the Janome DC2030 and Janome DC2050. Perfect for those who want to explore sewing and quilting without going into the quilting and semi-industrial sewing machine ranges.
As these machines are at a similar price point, we were left with the question, what are the differences between the Janome DC2030 and the Janome DC2050? While there are several differences between these two models, there are three major differences that sewists generally look for when looking to buy a new Janome sewing machine. These are the number of stitches & stitch functions, the feed dogs, and the machines size.
Stitches & Stitch Functions
Before we get started talking about the number of stitches, we should mention that a majority of sewists will turn to their favourite 5~10 stitches when they are sewing. While having 100’s of stitches can be great, most of the time, they are not often utilized. With this said, one thing that commonly accompanies machines with a larger stitch count, is more ‘stitch functionality’.
As their model numbers allude to, the DC2030 offers 30 stitches, while the DC2050 offers 50 stitches. As mentioned before, most people would not use all of the stitches, however, there is an additional stitch function that is often thought of as a ‘sewing must have’. This is the Janome DC2050’s One-Step Buttonhole. With the One-Step Buttonhole, you can set the button that you are sewing into the back of the foot and the sewing machine will stitch the perfect size buttonhole for you without having to stop and start!
The Feed Dogs and Accessories
The feed dogs are the series of little teeth that grab onto and pull your fabric through the sewing machine. As the feed dogs are essential in moving the fabric, it is imperative that all presser feet are designed to apply the right amount of pressure over the feed dogs (you may have seen Janome presser feet separated into 5mm, 7mm, and 9mm sets). The Janome DC2030 utilizes a 5mm feed dogs, while the DC2050 has a 7mm feed dog. While both will feed anything from fine silk to heavy denim and leather, as there are more 7mm models in the Janome range, there are also more options in presser feet; for example, if you are looking to finish a seem with a rolled hem (using the Janome Hemmer Foot), the maximum size of the finished hem on the DC2030 is 2mm while the DC2050 can produce up to 6mm hems.
Machine Size
When it comes to sewing, size can matter. While there is only a 2cm difference in width between the two models, Janome have been able to use this extra space to elongate the work space and the free arm on the DC2050, which makes moving your fabric while dressmaking or quilting much easier.
