Janome FD216 Sewing Machine comparison with JR1012

Janome JR1012 Vs Janome FD216: Full Feature Comparison

Janome FD216 Sewing Machine comparison with JR1012

With the new and improve beginner sewing machine range, sewing has been made even more simple. Building on the Janome JR1012, both incredibly popular machines, the Janome FD216 was already posed to be a handy sewing machine for those starting out or are infrequent sewists. However, it is the improvements that turn the Janome FD216 into one of the simplest and strongest mechanical machines in this range. These include the location of the bobbin, the built-in needle threader, and the ability to disable (drop) the feed dogs. But don’t just take our word for it, let’s compare the features of the Janome JR1012 to the Janome FD216 and see the difference for ourselves.

Before we delve into these comparisons, we should look at the original Janome sewing machines for beginners and what made them amongst the most popular starting sewing machines in Australia. Unlike Brother and other sewing machine brands which use a plastic frame for their starting sewing range, Janome incorporate an internal metal frame into every sewing machine. This internal metal frame ensures that the sewing machine can sew over any thickness of material without warping or affecting the machine’s internal timing. This meant that when a new sewist purchased one of these models, they did not have to worry about quickly ‘outgrowing’ the machine, and instead could learn and growth with them.

Improvements made to the Janome FD216

Drop in Bobbin System

Unlike the Janome JR1012, the bobbin on the FD series is loaded from the top of the needle plate. This move from the front of the machine to the top has several benefits, including easier loading, less chance of a thread jam, and the ability to see how much thread is left in the bobbin.

Built in Needle Threader

With good eyesight, a pair of tweezers, or a handheld needle threader, threading a sewing machine needle is easy. But what is easier, is having an inbuilt needle threader. With the Janome FD216, all the sewist has to do is pull the threader down (when it comes time to thread the needle), pass the thread over the threader and then release.

Feed Dog Lever

The feed dogs on a sewing machine grab the fabric and pull it backwards, it time with the stitch. However there are times that you may want to disable the feed dogs (such as darning and free motion embroidery). With the original models, this was achieved through the use of a “darning plate”, which fit on top of the needle plate. With the FD series, these feed dogs can be disabled with a flick of a switch.
